1. Filing cabinets came into being in the mid 1800s.
2. When filing cabinets were first invented, the term "file" referred to a bundled stack of papers.
3. In 1898, the first lateral file, or modern rendition of what we consider to be a file today, was invented.
4. The earliest rendition of a filing cabinet was actually a safe! Wooden shelves were placed inside to divide up valuable bundles of documents.
5. A letter cabinet was a popular early form of filing cabinet. As its name implies, it had a number of flat drawers with alphabetical dividers designed to separate documents.
6. The Amberg Peerless Cabinet Letter File was one of the more successful early versions of a filing cabinet. It had a number of drawers, each with with a label on the front. It was made in 1868, and within 20 years, over 1000 different businesses were using these cabinets to meet their filing needs.
7. Document filing cabinets were invented in 1868 as well. It was designed to hold documents that were folded in half twice, as was the practice when dealing with legal documents at the time.
8. Pigeon hole cabinets had a series of drawers which could not only be filled with multiple documents, but be easily relocated in another area of the cabinet for easy organization.
9. In 1886, the first metal filing cabinets were introduced. Prior to that, they were commonly made from wood!
10. The lateral file was invented by Edwin G. Siebels. He found the folding and unfolding of documents to be a terrible waste of time.
11. Siebels was never allowed to patent his lateral file, because, it was believed, keeping papers unfolded was more of an idea than an invention. He did, however, later receive an award for his genius development.
12. In modern day filing, the most common distinction between cabinets is lateral vs. horizontal. In a lateral filing cabinet, a drawer opens and documents are dropped down into the file. In a horizontal filing cabinet, the documents face outwards, like a bookshelf.
13. Lateral filing tends to take up less space than horizontal filing.
14. Horizontal filing makes it easier to accommodate different sizes of documents, versus lateral, where only one size of file may be stored per drawer, or, in some cases, per cabinet.
15. The three most common colors of filing cabinets are black, grey, and beige.
16. Carousel storage units are round filing cabinets. The files are kept on shelves, and the users turn the cabinets, allowing the needed file to be easily accessed.
17. Files are sometimes also called "Manila folders." The word Manila refers to the type of hemp used to build this specific type of folder. The term has, however, become somewhat universal.
18. The word "folder" is used to describe an empty file. The word "file" refers to a folder which has been filled!
19. In the early 1900s, the transfer filing cabinet became popular. A transfer filing cabinet is a more cheaply made filing cabinet, usually kept in a back room. At the end of each year, documents would be cleared from the primary filing cabinet and moved into a transfer cabinet, in order to make more room for up-and-coming documents.
20. A recent and popular development in the filing cabinet world is the development of the file cabinet on wheels, allowing files to become versatile and travel easily.
21. When filing papers, newer documents should be placed in front.
22. Paperclips should not be used in filing cabinets, as they tend to catch on other files and make them stick together. Staples are a better option.
23. A one inch margin should be left on each side to provide for easy sliding of the files.
24. It is well worth it to spend a bit extra on a cabinet, particularly if you plan to use it for a long time. A bit more money can buy a lot more durability.
25. Remember to go through your filing cabinet regularly and get rid of anything you don't need!

Do I really need a filing cabinet? I thought that they were being replaced with paperless electronic trails instead.

I wrote an email to aliensteve's company threatening to leave negative feedback for this buisness if they didn't come back here and remove the spam. Anyone want to make the effort to write something and I'll post it up wherever I can find?
