1. Tahiti is comprised of 118 islands in the Pacific Ocean. 2. While the area considered to be property of Tahiti is roughtly the size of Western Europe, the actual land mass (island, not ocean) that Tahiti occupies is only about the size of Rhode Island. 3. Tourists most frequently visit the "Society Islands", comprised of Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea and Taha'a. 4. Tahiti is an 8 hour flight from the Los Angeles International Airport. 5. Tahiti is halfway between North America and Australia. 6. Tahiti shares a time zone with Hawaii. 7. Tahiti's currency is the French Pacific Franc. 8. 110 or 220 volt adapters are required to use American appliances in Tahiti. 9. Air conditioning is not common in all areas of Tahiti. Often, a ceiling fan is used to cool a room. 20. Regular, expected tipping is not customary in French Polynesia, and is only given to recognize excellent service. 21. You must be 17 to purchase duty free alcohol or tobacco in Tahiti. 22. There are no poisonous snakes or spiders on the Tahitians Islands. The most dangerous animal is the stonefish, which will cause non-lethal poisoning if stepped on. 23. To preserve Tahitian native culture, every July, the Heiva festival is held in Papeete. This includes cultural craft sales, dance performances, and ancient sporting competitions. 24. The word "tattoo" derives its etiology from the Tahitian language. It is based on the name of the God, Tohu, who colored the fish of the ocean. Tattoos are a very important part of Tahitian culture, and were ceremoniously given to children who had reached adolescence. 25. Ia orana is Tahitian for "hello." All knowledge is power. Read enough factoids and you can transform into He-Man. |
