Does anyone else find this appalling?

IMO, dude was in a tough spot. He made a bad decision and knew it. He turned himself in. Throughout, I read this as the dude being a GOOD GUY despite his decision. He gets 15 years in prison, taxpayers foot that bill, and yet the AIG executive gets 4 years for $500M fraud! WTF???

Justice is a sham.

Unfair, yes. With a spin of undying optimism, he is now provided with three meals a day compliments of the taxpayer dollar, no?

How is that a good thing?

Clearly we've been taught the wrong morals all our lives. The moral of this story is that "lying is the best policy." Or, perhaps the moral is "money does buy everything."

It just goes to show that if you're poor and you do anything wrong (and try to do the right thing in the end) you get screwed over big time, but if you have tons of money and you do something atrocious, you get a slap on the wrist. I'm sure there are thousands upon thousands of similar examples. Hell, isn't Les Miserables pretty similar? Things clearly haven't changed much since that was written.
